Black & Decker Leaf Hog 12 Amp Electric Blower/Vacuum/Mulcher BV4000 Review

My family spent hours (if not days) raking leaves last fall. This fall, I ordered the Leaf Hog, and I'm glad I did. We "raked" (or is it "hogged") three times, as the leaves dropped off the trees, and each time put out two to four yard waste bags. There's no question that the vacuum attachment decreased the volume of the leaves. I'm not sure by how much, but if I had to guess, I'd say 4:1 or better, which saved me money on bags and on the yard waste stickers we have to put on the bags.
The Leaf Hog excels in reducing how long it takes to collect all of the leaves into piles and vacuum them up. I found the low speed was more than adequate to blow around dry leaves. It's also more accurate than the higher speed. What previously took four of us hours can be done in about 30 minutes. If you've got mulched beds, you'll want to use a rake to pull the leaves away from the beds so you don't blow your mulch all over the place.
Of course, both of my children (11 and 8 years old) wanted to try it. On low speed, I wasn't concerned about damage to their hearing, and they could each easily manipulate the blower. They were also able to use the vacuum, but it got too heavy for my 8-year-old when it started filling up.
The vacuum is where the Leaf Hog really earns its money. It quickly and easily sucks up leaves and small sticks. After using it to fill about ten bags of mulched leaves, the impeller seems to have suffered no damage. My 11-year-old discovered a trick to dumping the bag into the yard waste bag: simply insert the Leaf Hog bag's plastic handle into the yard waste bag first (to keep the yard waste bag open) and then tip over the Leaf Hog bag to empty the leaves into the yard waste bag.
I can see, as other reviewers noted, how the plastic clip that holds the bag onto the motor might break. However, if you fully depress the tab before you pull off the bag (and don't just yank it off), there should be no problem.
When using the vacuum, there may be a small amount of dust that comes through, but the bag filters almost all of it. What does come out is caught by the plastic cover on the back of the bag. When I was done, I just wiped off whatever loose dust I could and put the parts away.
The Leaf Hog reduces your workload, saves you money, and might even be fun.

Black & Decker BV2500 12 amp Electric Blower/Vacuum/Mulcher Review

I almost didn't buy the B&D Leaf Hog because of some of the negative reviews I read here but I'm glad I ultimately disregarded them. I did so because I went into the local home-improvement store and hefted one. It was so much more ergonomic than the competing Toro and seemed to be so much better designed, I took the plunge and I haven't been disappointed.
It is extremely comfortable to use. B&D really thought the design out. Switching from blower to vacuum couldn't be more easily or quickly accomplished. It's quieter than I expected (95 decibels measured on the vacuum). It really does mulch well and provides a steady supply for the compost pile. And to address the negative comments:
Someone complained about the impellor wearing out because it's plastic. They can't make it out of steel because of spark and fire hazards and if it was aluminum, it probably wouldn't last much longer and in either case it would add considerable cost. Another bright reviewer complained about having to tie a knot in the chord because the clip in the handle wasn't adequate. Well, a quick overhand knot has worked extremely well since the extension chord was invented, and is used by professional tool users everywhere! Someone also complained about the bag coming off, but they never noticed the clever clip there for the chord to help hold the bag on. Someone thought the vacuum was inadequate but they're probably not realizing that it draws a lot of amps and requires the appropriate gage extension chord (I recommend at least 12 gage). I found the vacuum to be plenty powerful enough and I had to turn the blower to "low" because it was blowing the rocks out of my (desert landscape) yard! I can't directly address the long-term reliability since I've only had mine a month or so, but it seems well built for the price.
The bottom line is: The Leaf Hog is a well-designed tool with great performance that is worth the cost (think about it - it's the price of a dinner for two at a nice restaurant and people are complaining that it's not built of titanium and nuclear powered). It will probably last longer if you treat it with the respect a tool deserves. This is an extremely useful tool that anyone with a yard will be happy to own. Also, if you plan on vacuuming a lot of leaves, I recommend getting the BV-006 leaf collection system because the included bag is for smaller jobs (and would get too heavy anyway if it was bigger).

Additionally, the BV2500 condenses 10 bags of raked leaves into just one bag of mulched leaves and works quietly, making yard work more pleasant. Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum Review

I sought an effective pine needle vacuum. I bought both this B&D unit AND the Toro equivalent model. They are nearly identical in size, shape, weight, specs, performance, price, and even their red color. Both products powerfully vacuum leaves quite well, but sucking pine needles is only 50 - 70% as effective by either brand. But that's not disappointing, especially in my rocks & stones & pebbles terrain where raking is impractical. Although both use metallic blades, the B&D does a much better job of mulching leaves.

Toro 51500 Universal Leaf Collector with 8-Foot Hose Review

Toro 51500 Universal Leaf Collector with 8-Foot Hose
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are three primary points of failure, and if you are not suspecting, you will quickly find them all.
The hose fits into a canvas sheet that will, in turn, fit over the Toro collapsing bin. The fit is achieved by pulling a drawstring and closing the bin. While in vacuum mode, there is considerable air pressure from the vac into the bag.
The first failure is that the draw is simply not enough to hold the canvas to the bin while the vac is operating. After having it pop off a dozen or so times, I came up with the idea of *clamping* the bag to the bin, using, of all things, automobile jumper cables. This worked, but the loose fit still allowed bits of leaves to be ejected around the lid.
The second point of failure is the hose - it is simply inserted into the canvas, and is held in place only by an elastic band inside the canvas sheet. Anyone who has ever messed with venting a dryer knows this simply will not work - and the air pressure here is much higher (not to mention the additional effect of the flying debris). With the lid finally secured by clamps, the hose kept popping out of place, further spewing leaf debris everywhere. The fix for this is some kind of cable tie, like what you would find on a dryer vent. Having none at hand, I simply used about a half roll of duct tape and put an end to that issue.
The third point of failure is that the hose has a small diameter and can get clogged up fast. During operation, you must make sure the hose is as straight as possible, as any kinks will cause debris to collect inside the hose.
These problems made a very difficult afternoon of it, having to stop and spend an hour or so re-engineering the equipment. I would not recommend it for that reason. Honestly, do people ever test these things before they start selling them?
GRADE: F.

The collection system is a great way to finish cleaning up my yard because there is no clean up!!! Everything I vacuum is already mulched and deposited in my trash can. It's easy to connect and fits both size trash cans I own. I have started composting my mulching because it is so easy and it is really good for my soil. I am very happy with my TriVac and now I have an accessory that makes it even better.
