thick which can support the lid opening and closing over time. Also the ring piece that keeps the bag in place really keeps the bag in place. I highly recommend.

If you have a narrow space available for a kitchen trash can and want a good looking unit, this may be your best option. It looks terrific sitting next to our all stainless-steel fridge. The one with the black plastic top is about thirty bucks less, but lacks the elegance of this model.
Our trash-can came with an all stainless steel opener pedal, which looks classy, even though you can find photos of this model on the Web with an all plastic, or a plastic & stainless steel, pedal. We've only had it for two years, so we can't vouch for longevity of the opening mechanism. In any case, tell your kids to go easy on the opener pedal, rather than stomping it. Release the pedal and the top closes slowly on its own.
These cans have a 5-year manufacturer's warranty, IF you register the purchase at their web-site and save the receipt. Based on pedal mechanism complaints from Amazon customers of similar SH cans, registering is advised.
Simple Human sells their own brand of [premium] trash bags for this can, but they come at a premium price. Since 13-gallon plastic kitchen bags available at any grocery store fit just fine, that's what we use. Carefully installed, you can't see any of the plastic bag with the top closed.
If you are used to just tossing stuff into a lid-less kitchen can, any trash can requiring you to open the top may be a bit frustrating at first.
Based on our research, this is the best-looking (and most expensive) kitchen trash can on the market. One star off for that high price (i.e., value).

(More customer reviews)I have had two of these for a few years. They are extremely durable, but there is a major design flaw.
The inside has plastic ribs design to help strengthen the containers.
This is where the problem is. When you fill trash bags up inside the container, the bags expand and the trash
nestles into the grooves. This makes pulling a full bag of trash out of the the container a major struggle. If
your trash bag is on the thin side, it will tear several times and you will be wrestling, tugging, pulling, twisting
and yanking with everything you have.
The other part of this is that the larger of the two openings is smaller than the overall width of the inside. Therefore the bag is bigger inside and all expanded and caught up inside the inner ribs. I dread Trash Tuesdays because of the pain that it has become to remove the trash.
One other note, the containers features very deep graining which keeps the item from looking like cheap plastic, but beware, this also means the dirt settles in. The only way I have found to truly clean these is with a power washer.

The opening of the trash can is sort of leaf shaped, and goes GREAT with her bedroom, and with a cool contemporary design. If you even think you like this can, you will not be disappointed. I will add, just for information, the first one arrived with a huge crack in it, but they immediately sent me another one that arrived perfectly. My daughter has even thrown it down the stairs onto a tile floor, and this one hasn't cracked.

Honey-Can-Do Round 40-Liter Trash Can With Step-Lift-Lid Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this trash can to replace an old, ailing plastic step-lift-lid can I had. I wanted something a little sleeker for the kitchen, and this seemed to fit the bill. The step-lift-lid is great for being able to dump things in without using your hands, and the profile of this is thin, so it fits nicely in a corner.
The main problem, however, is the overall design of the can itself. In order to hold the bag in place, this can has an inner-ring of plastic with metal latches. You put the bag through the inner ring and then lift up the latches, wrapping the bag top around them. This DOES end up holding the bag in place rather well. TOO well, in fact. Once you want to remove the bag, you're forced to lift up the latches, unhook the bag, then remove the inner ring in order to get the bag out of the can (a clumsy procedure at best). To add to the problems, however, there's a lip on the can where the inner plastic ring rests. If your bag is at all more than half full, it won't pull past this lip without force, jiggling the whole trash can, and occasionally tearing the bag trying to get it out. I've tried multiple times to figure out an elegant way to get the bag out of the trash can without fuss and hassle, and there doesn't seem to be one.
Again. It's a pretty trash can. And it's reasonably priced. But it's just too much of an annoyance to use, so I ended up buying another stainless can for more money somewhere else.
