(More customer reviews)We bought a slightly different model last year, the DZT-50-9. The first item we purchased stopped working. I called the company and they issued a Return Authorization number under warranty for the top. I returned the item. It took a long time for a new top to be sent back to me, and email inquiries as to the status of my return went initially unanswered. After 6 to 8 weeks they finally replied that it was sent via UPS. That was kind of a long time to have a piece of plywood for a trash can cover.
The new item works pretty well, but the infrared is very sensitive to water. Simply washing the cover with a sponge and a quick rinse, is enough to make the sensor faulty. When we put the batteries back in the top would automatically open and stay open. We would have to manually force it closed. If we used the Close button to close it, it would automatically open right back up. And after manually closing it, it would not open atomatically via the sensor. We would have to push the Open button. After a day or two, it starts functioning again. This has happened consistently for each of the 3 cleanings we have done so far.
Something else about the design, when our first model stopped working, we would have to grab the "latch" and open it that way. The latch is very poorly designed. Of course the intention of the sensor is that you would not have to use the latch, but when the sensor fails, it's all you got. I have to think the manual latch is almost an after thought and was never sent through R&D.
So in the end, I like the trash can, but we try not to clean it very often because it's so sensitive to water. I'm not sure I would buy it again. The next time I am in the market, I'd probably just look at cans that are opened manually via your foot. Or perhaps at least phone the company and research online reviews and see if they have made improvements in the technology. I really want to like this trash can, and most of the time it does work. They just need to make a better sensor.
