Keter 115-gallon Capacity Super Composter Review

Keter 115-gallon Capacity Super Composter
Average Reviews:

If you look at one of the pics you'll see what look like small red/orange spots at the corners. These are little tabs that are supposed to hold the corners together. As one reviewer said ... they don't. The box just falls apart at the corners no matter how you try to reinforce it, and no matter how gently you fill the box. I am a very experienced gardener/composter and good with tools. I can find SOME use for almost everything I have ever purchased for the garden. Well, I met my match. Keter should be ashamed for putting this piece of junk on the market. It's not worth 88 cents, and it's not worth the one star that I was forced to give it.
By the way, other than falling apart, it's a nice box.

Flowtron LE-900 The Ultimate Mulcher Electric Leaf Shredder Review

Flowtron LE-900 The Ultimate Mulcher Electric Leaf Shredder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a leaf shredder - not a mulcher. It is a sting trimmer inverted with a funnel on top. I used this to shred all my fall leaves - works great. My wife would load them and I would give it a bit of a stir with a stick. Shaking the unit back and forth will get small sticks to fall through without killing the strings.
Don't abuse it and it will work great. Forget what its purpose is and you will get grumpy and write negative reviews on Amazon. Leaf mulch went well on our beds, some of our plants didn't even die back - they were nice and toasty warm under their 4 inch blanket of shredded leaves. Just had to play the guessing game of when to remove some of the mulch to let the plants grow. Too soon and the spring frost will get them. Too late and they will end up stringy. I love my shredder. My in-laws will be getting one soon.

Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter Review

Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter
Average Reviews:

I bought a composting bin a number of years ago, completely oblivious to what is involved in composting. Toss stuff in and it "magically" turns to compost. Wrong! Compost has to be turned, I later learned. So the bin was emptied and has been sitting in my backyard for quite some time as it does not facilitate easily turning the compost (or turning it at all for that matter). I came across turning, tumbling, and spinning composters and selected this one. I transferred the stuff I had been tossing in a trash can (in hopes of the "magic" happening) into this composter. Wow! One week later, and it looks and smells wonderful! It still has a ways to go, and I still have more learning to do on the subject, but this composter has made the job very easy--almost not a "job" at all! I will more than likely continue composting for years to come because this composter makes it so simple and clean.

I was looking for a pail that was attractive enough to sit on the counter but large enough to reduce the trips to the compost bin (I have the compostumbler...highly recommended). I had a ceramic pail before but found it too small and heavy, and a hassle to clean. This one works well, and would get 5 stars were it not for the fact that the lid doesn't seal. I don't know if that's a design problem or if I just got a bad one, but it's a problem because it allows tiny fruit flies to get in. But I haven't seen another one this size, so I'll stick with it.

The fist time I tried to pickup the plastic insert/bucket the handle pulled off and now continuously does so. The bamboo is coming apart at the seems. Not what I would expect for $50. RSVP International PAIL-BOO Bamboo Compost Pail 3.25-qt.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd venture to guess that anyone giving this product a 5-star review hasn't owned it for very long. While it is beautiful to look at, and bamboo is one of Earth's most renewable natural resources, this pail is a waste of money. It is composed of narrow strips of bamboo glued together, meaning there are plenty of seams just waiting to burst. For my pail, that took about two months of light use. Suddenly, one of the seams separated, and it's extremely difficult to glue back together properly. Also, the plastic holding the charcoal filter against the bottom of the lid broke free after about two or three weeks, so every time I lift the lid, the filter falls out.
In this instance, bamboo is not the better choice. Do yourself a favor and buy stainless steel. What good is a renewable resource if it winds up in the landfill after minimal use?

BioBag Biodegradable Recyclable 3 Gallon Trash Waste Bags (Pack of 6 -- 150 bags)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have no garbage disposal and the garbage schedule is so strange - regular trash can only be put out twice a week in the green bins but biowaste can be put out any day in the brown bin. So our biodegradable waste requires its own little covered trashcan and the city recently started requiring biodegradable bags. I bought these BioBags and they work great. Small enough to fit the little trashcan, large enough to really fill it up and tie it securely. The only issue I've discovered is that wet biowaste will leak liquid through the bag into the bottom of the can. Not a big deal since the inside of my trashcan is removable and easily washable. Not sure if the leaking is due to the way they seal the bottom or if the bag is actually porous.

Recently rated #1 by Whole Home Journal! We think that using biodegradable bags to dispose of waste makes good sense because plastic bags litter our streets, backwoods and waterways. Studies indicate that over 100,000 marine animals and 2 million birds die each year from ingesting or being caught up in plastic debris. BioBags use no polyethylene in the production process and are fully certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to be 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable. During the brief time I used these bags, at least half of the time the bag either tore or leaked. I'm all for "going green", but unless you're very delicate with your garbage, only placing perfectly dry and very soft/flexible/amorphous items in your kitchen garbage can, these just don't hold up to what I would consider typical and reasonable use.

I use this to line the compost collection can I keep under the sink or I use one when I am doing a big cooking project to gather compostable items. If I let things set in the bag more than 5 days the bags start to leak as they start to break down. And breaking down is what I want them to do as I put them into my compost bin. Even in winter I notice that they start breaking down rather quickly. I am sure by spring when I am ready to use my compost these bags will be fully intergrated into my compost.

I use BioBag dog bags and love them, so I tried the kitchen bags also. The dog bags are sturdy and don't tear at all, but the kitchen bags seem to be made from something else. They don't fit in an average kitchen garbage bin and they also tear extremely easily. If you are using them strictly as compost bags and only putting scraps in them I'm sure they'd do fine, but they shouldn't be used for an average kitchen garbage bag.
Also, it only contains 12 bags. Add the price of shipping and this becomes very expensive for a bag only to be used in a compost pile.

Pro: I am very pleased with the compost keeper. I have it in my sink and is very nice looking and unobtrusive. There is no noticeable odor emitting from it.
Con: When I opened the box it came in there was not even a sheet of paper explaining about the filter top. At first I tried to open the top, then realized that wouldn't happen.
Had to spend my time several days to try and find out about filter replacement. Called Amazon and then emailed them. Finally received the phone number of the manufacturer and ultimately talked with a live person. It turns out you just remove the filter by pulling it out of opening and replacing it with a new one. All it would take is a simple piece of paper explaining this.

Pinzon 1-Gallon Ceramic Compost Pail Review

Pinzon 1-Gallon Ceramic Compost Pail
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a ceramic container about 9" high and 6" diameter. It's bigger than a typical sugar jar but much smaller than a wastebasket. It has a lid with holes and a charcoal filter inside to control odors. It's being sold as a place to keep fruit peelings and the like before transporting them outside to a compost pile. It's supposed to look like a white porcelain version of a garbage can, in case you are charmed to have a white garbage can on your kitchen counter. The same or a similar product appears to be sold under the names Pinzon, Norpro, RSVP.
This is the sort of item which is designed by some marketing person, then made and sold without ever have been tested in practice. Families who compost tend to have at least four members and be inclined towards fruits and vegetables - so the volume of stuff they generate for composting would fill up this container very quickly. Also, there is an annoying design flaw; the inside bottom has a deep cleft which is difficult to clean and slow to dry after being washed. Which would have been discovered immediately if the people who produce this ever actually tried it in their own home. To put out a consumer product without testing it - I hate it when that happens.
Before buying, go to the the Norpro version on Amazon and see the 83 reviews, which are evenly distributed from "Just what I needed" to "Too small, too fragile, rather have a stainless version."
If not for the fact that it's absurdly small, can't be cleaned easily, and is quite fragile, it might have been good for composting. In the meantime, this size of container is useful - I just made a huge batch of granola and filled up my new mini- garbage can with it!

For best results, replace the filter every two to three months and hand wash the pail regularly. Pinzon replacement filters are available and may be rinsed and reused. Worm Factory 360 WF360B Worm Composter, Black Review

Worm Factory 360 WF360B Worm Composter, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(As the process continues, the review will update.)
Hi, I'm Michelle, and I have worms.
A few weeks ago I made the decision to give vermicomposting a try. I live in an area that supports recycling, but we still have to take the items there. The rest of the trash costs us per weight, and ends up decomposing in a way that is not healthy. Why not reduce the trips to recycling, the money spent having someone else take away the rest of it, and end up with healthy compost for our plants? Hey, when it's January and you live in one of the coldest states, you start thinking about gardening so that you don't go all Jack Torrance.
I read a lot on the topic, including a lot of advice on making my own bin. However, DIY bins almost always involved work in getting your slimy friends to go to The Other Side of The Bin. I decided to make the investment and buy a stackable unit, because they're made and used in a way that the worms migrate up and leave the finished compost behind. I thought it was well-worth the money now for the convenience and the anticipated money saved.
Set up of this unit was very easy, and I choose to follow the advice of many to set it up a week or two before the worms arrived in order to introduce them in when the environment was ideal for them. Worms, come to find out, don't care about your rotting food and yesterday's paper so much as they care about the microbes that care about these things, and so setting it up allows those microbes to show-up and chow down. The kit gave everything I needed, including shredded paper, with the exception of table scraps and the recommended dirt to introduce grit and microorganisms. Dirt is not readily accessible in Minnesota in January, but I managed a couple tablespoons of mud. (Besides, when the worms showed up, they brought some dirt with them and I had some, er, well-aged scraps.)
Yesterday -1/27/10- the worms arrived and I introduced them to the bin. While they were well-packaged, shipped next day air, and held at the post office, they'd still been through a lot, and were initially sluggish (is calling a worm sluggish a mixed metaphor or just possibly defamatory?) but after a couple hours much more active. They're mostly the surface and do seem to be attracted to the areas with the scraps.
While it's early, and I intend to update this as the process continues, I'm quite happy with the bin and the very detailed instructions or setting up the bedding, etc. It's also very simple looking and attractive enough that, had I not a basement, it would be acceptable upstairs. A nice feature, and you can see it in the picture, is that the lid has quick guide to what scraps are best and offers some great tips.
I'm new at this, but I'll happily answer any questions I can in the comments about my personal experience or understanding of things. If you email me, I also might post that to comments -- referring to you as Ann on a Mouse, if you're shy. YouTube has lots of videos, but you will feel weird confessing to people that you've spent hours watching people fiddling with worms. (Trust me, I've been there.)

Going well. Learning to not over -- overfeed, overworry, over-nose-around. The worms are still adjusting, but the environment seems to be working, and they're going at the scraps. Because I cook most nights, and make lots of veggies, I think it'll be a while before they'll be able to handle what I could give them, so I'm holding back.! There has been a day or two where I've not added to it, and let them catch up. Been grinding the scraps up in a chopper -- anything to start them out right. Also, upping the amount of fiber -- newspaper, mostly. Only 1 has tried to go "over the wall."
I continue to read up on the topic and my friends are either genuinely interested or humoring me until someone can show up with my injection.

Hubert Hawkins: The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Griselda: Just remember that.
The Court Jester
A mortar and pestle is a great way to ground up dried egg shells. The worms use them for grit, which aids in digestion, it's a source of calcium which could help with reproduction -- or not -- and it prevents the soil from being too acidic. This is the one I have: Harold's Kitchen 3-1/2 Inch Round Mortar and Pestle, but I picked it more for looks than practicality. If you've saved up a number of shells, I've read you can use something like a plastic bucket, or dishpan, and a mason jar. A lot of folks just crumble by hand or toss the shells in whole.

Happy Valentine's Day, and what's more romantic than a bin of worms?
Things are going fine. I've found a warmer spot in my basement, and now the bin is at about 65F, which is the best I can hope for this time of year unless I want to move the gang to the guest room. I've also ordered more worms. We're just creating too much waste right now and could use the help ... and I'm impatient. We have a freezer in the basement and I have a good size Tupperware container to freeze excess, but there's only so much room.
As kitchen scraps accumulate I use Norpro Ceramic Compost Keeper (in red.) It works well, and has a filter to stop your kitchen from smelling. The handle is shoddy though, and it arrived chipped -- I'll be honest and say I should have gotten a metal one. Whether you chose ceramic or metal, there are attractive designs out there though, that'll look okay on your counter. Compost keepers also allow scraps to age for a few days, which means they attract attention faster in the bin. Freezing scraps, or microwaving them, also breaks them down and has a similar effect, with the added consideration of killing off fruit fly eggs or mites that might have hitchhiked from the grocery store. Most mites are actually beneficial, but I think most folks are more comfortable not having stow-aways. One last note on the counter compost keeper: mix it up a little and be aware of how old the oldest scraps are so that you don't end up with a stinky mess at the bottom. After a week or so, maybe less, it's time to freeze or make sure the oldest stuff is what's for dinner in the bin!

I should mention that the Worm Factory comes with a lot of stuff. There's coconut coir for the base bedding, and a lot of people swear by it and continue to use it. It's sent as a brick and you soak it in water until it's hydrated and smells like earth and clean soil. There's shredded newspaper, also for bedding, and other related materials. (Paper and cardboard serve as food & bedding, and the addition of them throughout the process keeps smells down, helps if you end up with extra moisture, and it vital to the process.)There's also a hand rake and a scraper. I've never used the scraper. There's also a thermometer which my husband wrote WORMS across so that there are no mix-up with the one in the kitchen -- I supported him in this. There's also a detailed instruction manual, which helped put me at ease. (This is what I received and what they offer currently -- I'd look at the product description to verify this is still accurate when you order.)
The WF (Worm Factory) is designed with a spigot to drain out extra liquids that might fall into the collection tray -- which is different from your working tray with the bedding, worms, and scraps. How moist a bin should be is the matter of some debate and nothing I feel experienced enough to speak to. There are also many discussions on what to do with this liquid -- which is called leachate, but some people call it worm tea. Most experts call worm tea something else -- a deliberate effort to create a mixture to pour on plants which I'm too early in the process to have done. I will say that my bin is moist, but not so moist that there has been drainage. I've rescued the odd worm from the collection bin, but not more than a drop or two of liquid. Since bins evolve, this might change. The design is also made for worms who fall down there to be able to crawl back up.
I'm adding updates enough to see this will get unwieldy before too long, so I'll announce them here, but place them in comments. :)

Composting with worms allows you to turn kitchen scraps, paper waste and cardboard into nutrient-rich soil for your plants. The Worm Factory 360 composting system makes the entire process quick and easy. With a thermo siphon air flow design, the Worm Factory 360 increases the composting speed. Now you can produce compost much faster than traditional composting methods. Master Gardeners agree, worm castings are one of the richest forms of fertilizer that you can use. The Worm Factory 360 can be used indoors or outdoors allowing year round production. Now composting is no longer limited to backyards. The Worm Factory 360 is odorless making it great for apartments, kitchens, garages, porches and more. Simply add a handful of worms and your organic waste to the bottom tray. The worms will start processing the food. Once the bottom tray is filled add another tray. The worms migrate upward to the newest food source leaving the bottom tray full of nutrient-rich compost. As waste is broken down, moisture filters through the system, taking nutrient-rich particles with it. This makes it possible to harvest organic liquid fertilizer right from the spigot. 20 year warranty.

We have been using BioBags for about two years now and have been very satisfied with their performance. We use them to line a small covered waste pail, which we call a "cootie bin." We close the bag and empty the pail about once a week, throwing the bag into our compost pile. The bags break down very nicely and fairly quickly. The one thing we have to look out for is that the bags can start to break down in the pail if too much moisture makes it in with the waste and the temperature in the house is warm. I can tell you that's not a mess you clean up more than once. As long as we don't leave the bag in the pail too long, things are fine.
