(More customer reviews)this was a gift. after about 10 days of using it, i noticed it was developing rust inside, about an inch below the lip, all the way around. not what you expect of not-so-cheap stainless steel. i would buy a more expensive one, but they all seem to be about the same quality/price range or lower.... and the ceramic ones are heavy.... it's time for someone to manufacture a good grade stainless steel one. i am back to my old ugly open plastic container till i find a better solution.....

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a pail that was attractive enough to sit on the counter but large enough to reduce the trips to the compost bin (I have the compostumbler...highly recommended). I had a ceramic pail before but found it too small and heavy, and a hassle to clean. This one works well, and would get 5 stars were it not for the fact that the lid doesn't seal. I don't know if that's a design problem or if I just got a bad one, but it's a problem because it allows tiny fruit flies to get in. But I haven't seen another one this size, so I'll stick with it.

RSVP International Bamboo Compost Pail 4.5-qt. Review

(More customer reviews)The fist time I tried to pickup the plastic insert/bucket the handle pulled off and now continuously does so. The bamboo is coming apart at the seems. Not what I would expect for $50. This compost pail would not be a bad deal if it were $20, but for almost $50 the quality just isn't there. I'm thinking about retuning it.

(More customer reviews)I'd venture to guess that anyone giving this product a 5-star review hasn't owned it for very long. While it is beautiful to look at, and bamboo is one of Earth's most renewable natural resources, this pail is a waste of money. It is composed of narrow strips of bamboo glued together, meaning there are plenty of seams just waiting to burst. For my pail, that took about two months of light use. Suddenly, one of the seams separated, and it's extremely difficult to glue back together properly. Also, the plastic holding the charcoal filter against the bottom of the lid broke free after about two or three weeks, so every time I lift the lid, the filter falls out.
In this instance, bamboo is not the better choice. Do yourself a favor and buy stainless steel. What good is a renewable resource if it winds up in the landfill after minimal use?

(More customer reviews)I use this to line the compost collection can I keep under the sink or I use one when I am doing a big cooking project to gather compostable items. If I let things set in the bag more than 5 days the bags start to leak as they start to break down. And breaking down is what I want them to do as I put them into my compost bin. Even in winter I notice that they start breaking down rather quickly. I am sure by spring when I am ready to use my compost these bags will be fully intergrated into my compost.

The only negative is that although I don't smell anything from the pail, the fruit flies do. The pail still attracts fruit flies in the summer months. I don't know that they can actually get in past the filters but they try. And I don't know if there is a way around this issue.

Con: When I opened the box it came in there was not even a sheet of paper explaining about the filter top. At first I tried to open the top, then realized that wouldn't happen.
Had to spend my time several days to try and find out about filter replacement. Called Amazon and then emailed them. Finally received the phone number of the manufacturer and ultimately talked with a live person. It turns out you just remove the filter by pulling it out of opening and replacing it with a new one. All it would take is a simple piece of paper explaining this.

(More customer reviews)This is a ceramic container about 9" high and 6" diameter. It's bigger than a typical sugar jar but much smaller than a wastebasket. It has a lid with holes and a charcoal filter inside to control odors. It's being sold as a place to keep fruit peelings and the like before transporting them outside to a compost pile. It's supposed to look like a white porcelain version of a garbage can, in case you are charmed to have a white garbage can on your kitchen counter. The same or a similar product appears to be sold under the names Pinzon, Norpro, RSVP.
This is the sort of item which is designed by some marketing person, then made and sold without ever have been tested in practice. Families who compost tend to have at least four members and be inclined towards fruits and vegetables - so the volume of stuff they generate for composting would fill up this container very quickly. Also, there is an annoying design flaw; the inside bottom has a deep cleft which is difficult to clean and slow to dry after being washed. Which would have been discovered immediately if the people who produce this ever actually tried it in their own home. To put out a consumer product without testing it - I hate it when that happens.
Before buying, go to the the Norpro version on Amazon and see the 83 reviews, which are evenly distributed from "Just what I needed" to "Too small, too fragile, rather have a stainless version."
If not for the fact that it's absurdly small, can't be cleaned easily, and is quite fragile, it might have been good for composting. In the meantime, this size of container is useful - I just made a huge batch of granola and filled up my new mini- garbage can with it!
