Other than the cumbersome disadvantage to this automated touch-less trash can, I think the only advantage is its roomy compartment minus the lid which really obstructs the way you try to stuff the can with trash. However I can find a better made trash can in its place.

(More customer reviews)After much agonizing, I took the plunge and ordered this 6.5 gallon (25 liter) rectangular step trash can from [...] ($79).
The can arrived promptly and in an excellent package (undoubtedly aided by the shape of the product itself.) Being in a small town, I was not able to look at an actual model in a physical store, so I did have my concerns, one of which is the prospect of having to continuously shell out for the expensive liners supplied by the manufacturer. So I was considerably relieved as I effortlessly slipped a grocery plastic bag over the "smart bucket" that sits snuggly inside the can, without the bag showing on the outside.
The can is aesthetically pleasing, and the mechanism works gracefully: the can does not topple over with stepping, and the lid comes down ever so softly. Another plus is that there is nothing sticking out in the back, so that the unit can sit snuggly against a wall or cabinet without any risk of its scrapping against the wall/cabinet.
I salute the designer of this unit - well done!

(More customer reviews)The can works by putting some pressure on the lid and it opens. The can is tall and thin. It works best with bags you buy manufactured by Brabantia. The problem for me arose about two years after buying the can. The lid has plastic hinges and one broke away. The lid would then not close. The can comes with a 10 year warranty and one would think that the manufacturer or retailer would issue a replacement. The problem is that the retailer has you go to Brabantia. If you call their US office in NJ you will find that no one picks up the telephone. OK, they have an email address. They will not answer an email. So much for spending $100+ on a trash can that touts itself on being engineered well and with a 10 year warranty. Next time I'll just spend $30 and get a Chinese cheapo.

We used it gently but the foot pedal mechanism broke. We contacted umbra and they were nice enough to send a replacement mechanism. BUT, it was for the wrong sized can and also when we flipped the can over we saw the flimsy plastic was just broken through, no replacement would have helped anyways. Totally disappointed...I could have bought a stainless steel one for just double the price of this plastic one...and now here I am having to buy a new can...off to do that now.

(More customer reviews)This is a very well designed trash can that looks nice in the kitchen. I put this can on my wish list (and received it as a gift) after doing a lot of comparison shopping. I considered Simple Human trash cans (which seems to have cornered the market on trash cans). I was, however, discouraged by the number of reviews that said that the special "lid-shox" lids started to make strange noises over time and by several reviewers who said that some of their trash cans are difficult to clean one the inside (although some other reviewers dispute this). Also, I decided in the end that I didn't want a pedal bin, which most simple human bins are, because the space where I needed the trash can in my kitchen would make it awkward to step on the pedal. Finally, my sister has a Brabantia and said that the trash can has held up well for eight years, even with two small children in the house, and while she had trouble with the top, Brabantia customer service sent her a replacement part quickly and was very helpful.
Overall, I like this trash can a lot. It fits in the tight space in my kitchen and looks good. I also like that it's got a handle built into the back, so that I can pick up the bin with ease (it would be a bit awkward otherwise). Still, there are few considerations other buyers may want to take into account before they purchase. One is that trash liners do not fit easily between the insert and the outside of the bin. Even Brabantia's bags are a bit difficult to fit. I've decided to use regular tall trash can liners, which are a bit more difficult to fit into the trash can, but not much more than the Brabantia bags. I wish that there were a mechanism to hold the bag firmly in place over the inner bin. I am thinking about buying an extremely large rubber band type thing to do this. Also, if you need to empty a dust pan into the bin, buyers should know the actual opening of the bin won't allow for most dust bins. The actual opening at the top is 7 1/2 in. deep (front to back), 8 in. wide (side to side) and 9 1/2 in. diagonal. I have bought a new dust pan, which is small enough to empty into the bin.
Finally, this trash can is really expensive -- it's too much to charge for a trash can. But I am extremely grateful to the generous friend who bought it for me.

I paid around $200 for it and at the time, I thought to myself, I can't believe I'm spending so much on a trash can. But 7 years later, I'm so thankful I did. I was worried that the seal between the butterflys would not be good enough to keep the odors contained. The foot lever works very well and the doors close very smoothly. The only reason I have not given the product 5 stars is beacause I have only had it 2 months. You never know what will happen in the future. Good luck with your purchase.

(More customer reviews)We got this trash can when they started selling it I think a couple years ago and have loved it (well, considering it's just a trash can...).
I worried it was too big before we got it (we have a small kitchen), but considering we get both trash and recycling stowed away. For a small family it's a good size -- don't have to go out with the trash every day, but it's not so big that it gets gross before we do. When having a party or other occasion for generating more trash you can take out the smaller bins and just use it as one ~15 gallon trash can (that's a lot of trash).
Don't underestimate how convenient it is to have recycling, too.
My favorite feature though is how stable it is. There's never a worry that it'll tip over (or barely move, even) when you step on it to open it up. Also, the lid closes quietly and it's easy to keep clean.
Only downsize is that you really want to use the SimpleHuman trash bags ("size G") which are about twice as much per bag as a regular kitchen trash bag. For our use we calculated it to not be too much a year; but you might think differently (but then maybe you should reconsider looking at an expensive trash can in the first place!). The simplehuman bags also seems to only come in small 20 bag packs.

The bag goes all the way to the bottom of the can, so you can pack the can with weighty items without worrying about the bag coming loose. These liners are thick and durable, so not likely to get punctured and leak. The drawstring is a convenient feature. So even though there are cheaper alternatives I keep buying these bags: they are just so convenient. I deduct one star for the price.

If you have a narrow space available for a kitchen trash can and want a good looking unit, this may be your best option. It looks terrific sitting next to our all stainless-steel fridge. The one with the black plastic top is about thirty bucks less, but lacks the elegance of this model.
Our trash-can came with an all stainless steel opener pedal, which looks classy, even though you can find photos of this model on the Web with an all plastic, or a plastic & stainless steel, pedal. We've only had it for two years, so we can't vouch for longevity of the opening mechanism. In any case, tell your kids to go easy on the opener pedal, rather than stomping it. Release the pedal and the top closes slowly on its own.
These cans have a 5-year manufacturer's warranty, IF you register the purchase at their web-site and save the receipt. Based on pedal mechanism complaints from Amazon customers of similar SH cans, registering is advised.
Simple Human sells their own brand of [premium] trash bags for this can, but they come at a premium price. Since 13-gallon plastic kitchen bags available at any grocery store fit just fine, that's what we use. Carefully installed, you can't see any of the plastic bag with the top closed.
If you are used to just tossing stuff into a lid-less kitchen can, any trash can requiring you to open the top may be a bit frustrating at first.
Based on our research, this is the best-looking (and most expensive) kitchen trash can on the market. One star off for that high price (i.e., value).

(More customer reviews)You might think that $120 for a trash can is very pricey.... Well, it is. If you shop around though, most good quality stainless steel trash cans usually costs $50-100. I made the mistake of buying a cheap $30 stainless steel trash can from Target that was the worst trash can design you can imagine (hard to get the trash bag out, made a loud clang when you closed the lid, and the hardware to work the foot step to open the lid would rip the trash bags). We needed to upgrade and throw away the trash can, so we decided to go all out. However, adding some filler item that you need for the kitchen can get you the $25 off $125 that Amazon usually offers every month can get the can under $100. The can is quiet when closing and the trash bags come out very easily since the inside (removable for cleaning) lining is tapered. Would be 5 stars if it was cheaper, but if you want a quality trash can to match your stainless steel appliances, this can might be for you.
