Removable black plastic container inside that slides out and empties easily. Also will hold the smaller-typical plastic grocery or drugstore bags without a problem. I do recommend it if you have a tight spot or just need a small one.

(More customer reviews)I bought this set from Costco around a year ago to replace my old trash can and we love this product. At first I was uncertain about the battery life, but I've only had to replace the batteries once in the entire year of owning this. The sensor isn't too sensitive and I haven't had any problems with it not responding when it should, although we do clean off the top at least once a week when cleaning the house. People who come to visit always get a small scare at the trash can opening on its own when they go to throw something away which is always fun to watch. The smaller can is a nice bonus that we use in the bathroom, although the handle on that one can get in the way when I go to empty the trash bucket inside and put it back in, but other than that this product has been excellent.

(More customer reviews)I moved into a new apartment about 6 months ago and needed some fresh trashcans (since I didn't keep all of them from my previous home). I searched high and low at discount stores, home stores, Amazon, etc. But non had the exact trashcan style and size that I was looking for.
Then I came across these Umbra eco-friendly trashcans. A bit reluctant to order a trash can online (although I do buy just about everything else online) I tried one out.
I am very pleased and have since ordered a couple more. These are a great size for a home-office, bathrooms, closet (to throw dry-cleaning tags into), etc. The bright colors inside the cans are a pleasant surprise when changing the bags out.
These are sturdy, nicely made trash cans and I highly recommend them.

The lid keeps odors from escaping very far and the can itself is the perfect size for reusing plastic grocery bags as trash bags. I could imagine using this for other areas of the house as well, particularly the bathroom. It might be a little too small for an office depending on how high-traffic the room is. For my purposes, it has performed very well for over a year and has exceeded my expectations. I recommend it to anyone looking for a small, attractive waste can.

(More customer reviews)There is no doubt that this is a product with superb design (the lid is even contoured for lifting by hand) and build quality. However, the normal operation of stepping on the foot pedal does jerk the lid open with a force that makes the whole can lurch backward. Do this a few times and the can works it's way against a wall or kitchen cabinet and can no longer open fully because the lid needs clearance from behind. Simply moving it forward and away from obstruction allows it to work again. I rated this 4 stars because it's an annoying characteristic that won't go away. The simple extension of plastic into a bumper would keep the hinged end away from walls and cabinets and fix this problem.

(More customer reviews)I previously had a pretty but useless round trash bin with a circular lid. This trash can is awesome. It's easy to assemble, and the pedal works very nicely. I also like how the lid moves back down slowly and gracefully - it's a nice touch so you don't have to hear the can slamming all the time. I put a large Hefty bag inside, and this works well. Smells are pretty well contained, and if you can smell something, that means it's really been way too long. Foot pedal seems to be pretty durable, and feels substantial when you step on it.
I don't have children/pets so I cannot speak to the effectiveness of the lock.
Minor complaint: Can't really place is flush against the wall since the hinge sticks out. This isn't a huge problem but you notice it. You have to place the can a few inches away from the wall. I still give it five stars because I don't think this affects the functionality, or the joy it has brought into my disheveled life. Highly recommend this can. Very nice to look at and easy to keep clean.
